Upcoming Mountain Bike Races

Palmer Park Mountain Bike Racing

As we transition from summer into fall, there are several local mountain bike races . This Sunday is the Pro Cycling Classic in Palmer Park. It was originally scheduled for July 1st but had to be rescheduled because of park closures due to the Waldo Canyon Fire. Pre-registration through Pre-Race.com ends tonight, September 21st. There is also race day registration for an extra fee.

Race distances will be typical cross-country lengths. If I’m reading the course map right, it uses a similar course to the 2 Sand Creek Series races this summer but in reverse. Palmer Park has great riding and these are some great trails.

There will be a pizza lunch and the number of pizzas ordered will be based on the pre-registration numbers so Andy would like everyone to pre-register. Donations collected for the pizza lunch will go to Kids on Bikes so take some cash. There will be a Kids on Bikes fun race at 12:15 that is free.

Go to SandCreekSports.com for all the Pro Cycling Classic details.

Next weekend, September 29 & 30, is 24 Hour National Mountain Bike Championships also in Palmer Park. Registration for the 24 Hours of Colorado Springs ends this Sunday.

Then coming up on October 6th is the Ring the Peaks Race. This race is a tough 70ish mile ride around Pikes Peak on Ring the Peak Trail. There’s no entry fee, no support and no course marking for this race.

Red Rock, Section 16 and White Acres Trails

Red Rock Canyon Open Space

The next Master Plan meeting for Red Rocks Open Space, Section 16 and White Acres is tonight at 6:30. It is being held at the Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou St. The focus of tonight’s meeting is trails. This is a great opportunity for mountain bikers to give their input on these trails.

Info on trails in the areas and other information on the Master Plan process is posted on the Colorado Springs website. The schedule of future meetings for those open spaces is also posted there.

Campus Cross 2012

Tomorrow, September 8th, Pikes Peak Velo will be holding a race at the UCCS Sports Complex to kick off the cyclocross season in Colorado. Attracting both National Champions and first-time racers, the event is challenging and fun. This course will offer grass, single track, lung-busting climbs, technical twists, run-ups, and of course…leg-burning obstacles.

There will be another free Kids Race organized by Kids on Bikes plus a Citizens Category just for first-time cross racers…all you need is a bike with knobby tires! Head out and experience the fastest growing segment in cycling…Cyclocross! View the 2012 Campus Cross flyer for more detailed information including directions, start times, registration, etc.

Stephanie’s Trail Work Day

Stephanie's Trail Work

Medicine Wheel will be working on building a brand spanking new trail, the Bonus Loop on Stephanie’s Trail, this Saturday May 19. The Bonus Loop will add a little variety and new views to the route. There will be two sessions, from 8am to 11am and from 12 noon to 3pm. Lunch will be provided by La’au’s Tacos, so either stay over after the morning session or come early for the afternoon.

As usual, take suncreen, water and gloves. Medicine Wheel will provide all the tools and assembly instructions. Don’t miss this opportunity to help create a new gem in the Colorado Springs trail system! Please RSVP Harry at harry@harryhamilldesigns.com and let him know if you’d like to work in the morning or afternoon. Crew Leaders, especially, RSVP. Others can show up but it makes it easier for them to know how many will be there.

Stephanie’s Trail is located in the SW corner of Bear Creek Park. They we will be meeting at the upper trail head parking lot on Gold Camp Road.

Besides volunteers willing to get down and dirty, they need a person or two to hang out at the trail head and help register participants, set them up and send them off in the right direction.

Can’t help Medicine Wheel out on Saturday? They have plenty of other trail work planned.
